Safety & Security

Over the past few years, there has been an alarming rise in extremism and the Right, through their rhetoric and rallies, have been stoking an atmosphere of political violence. There were more than 9,600 recorded threats against members of Congress and their families last year according to Capitol Police. A tenfold increase since 2016. Including the successful attack on the partner of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Threats against federal judges have spiked 400% in the past six years. Elections administrators in Nevada have resigned because of harassment. Librarians in Louisiana have received death threats for opposing book bans. And on Jan. 6, 2021 there was an attempted coup of the US Capitol. The work of our movement is under threat more than ever.

Across the country the risk of violence against public officials, philanthropic workers, even general supporters of the left, and their families has begun to snowball. Our nation's roots in political dissidence and vehement protection of free speech are being warped at alarming rates and across new platforms to spur incendiary, dangerous actions. Our best and brightest are under attack, and our most vulnerable are the number one target. The political landscape is being reshaped by those who wish us harm, and we need to evolve to protect our people.

In order to recruit and retain the volunteers, organizers, and leaders of our work across all levels, we must be able to protect ourselves from hackers, trackers, and violent extremists. From building situational awareness and developing crisis response protocols to ensuring strong cyber hygiene and communications practices, keeping teams safe is a challenge that requires holistic solutions - where there currently are almost none.

NEWCO Labs is working to develop the tools to help better train our leaders and supporters on how to stay safe while furthering our cause. We want to help you identify threats before they have the opportunity to harm our teams, and ensure everyone knows what to do in case of a crisis. Building safer practices in person and online requires us to think outside the box, and we aim to support today's leaders and tomorrow’s rising stars in defending against growing threats of violence.

Through our Security & Safety support, in partnership with At Risk International, we provide training that is made to help tackle your biggest challenges, and prepare you for what could be coming next. So your team has skills for safety as they strive to make the world a better place.
