Steve Alfaro
SENIOR CREATIVE & CULTURE STRATEGIST
Steve Alfaro is a Senior Creative and Cultural Strategist with NEWCO Strategies. Steve transitioned from the Latino entertainment and cable TV scene in Los Angeles to dedicating the last 15 years to advocacy in Washington D.C. His work includes producing culturally relevant content and campaigns. His expertise lies in seamlessly integrating art, culture, digital, and traditional tactics, creating powerful connections through a multi-touchpoint approach.
Steve's journey began at SíTV Media (now Fuse Media), a pioneering cable channel for bi-cultural Latinos. Here, he played a pivotal role in developing compelling branding campaigns for their music and documentary-style shows. A significant highlight during his time there was helping forge a partnership with Voto Latino. Together, they conceived a first-of-its-kind citizen journalism project, the Crash the Parties Political Reporter Competition, where two winners were sent to the 2008 Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention to report firsthand.
Steve then transitioned to become Voto Latino’s inaugural Creative and Digital Director, dedicating over 10 years to spearheading numerous innovative digital projects, summits, public service announcements, Census campaigns, and voter registration drives for both Midterm and Presidential campaigns. Among the highlights of his time, he supported the production of a two-hour special on MSNBC, a town hall discussion focused on the vital role of the Latinx community in our country, titled Beyond Borderlines. This show received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding News Discussion and Analysis. Additionally, he was a key member of the original team that established the first-ever National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) holiday. Steve contributed significantly to the digital and design team, and NVRD continues to utilize the branding he crafted and led.
Steve transitioned to becoming a full-time consultant for numerous organizations, including The McCourtney Institute for Democracy, the International Rescue Committee, and Poder Latinx. At Poder Latinx, he played a pivotal role in the start-up organization, guiding them through a digital transformation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Steve revolutionized their digital experience by designing and producing a virtual art gallery. This gallery featured multiple digital art pieces from Latinx artists across the country, complemented by curated music. Together, they crafted a virtual experience that set itself apart from what most were doing during the lockdown period.
Most recently, Steve co-founded Avanza EV, a social enterprise committed to expediting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in low-income Latinx communities. He spearheaded their pilot program in Maryland, which aimed to introduce EV charging infrastructure and provide bilingual EV education to three multi-family apartment complexes. During this initiative, he organized two EV Car Shows, during which pledges were collected from tenants to transition to EVs, and developed partnerships with local auto dealerships.
Steve is not only a native Spanish speaker but also takes great pride in being the son of immigrant parents from Guatemala; his background has played a significant role in shaping who he is today. He currently resides in Washington D.C. with his wife, two daughters, and dog.
